AT HOME WITH: LOUISE MERTENS

WHO IS LOUISE MERTENS?

"Creative director & visual artist ever since the digital wave began. Running my own studio since 2014 where I've worked for various clients from all over the world. A very enthusiastic woman with a hungry heart that likes to explore the world and loves to meet inspiring people and places. Family, open conversations and positivity are dear to me. Discovering my passions and goals at a young age resulted in an ambitious lifestyle where I like to push myself and set new achievements along the way."

HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR JOB?

"Translating concepts and ideas for clients into visual images, campaigns and minimal designs. After becoming a mother in 2021, I decided to follow my dream to fully focus on my personal artworks which I exhibit and sell. Combining my digital, photographical and manual experiences into abstract artworks. Inspired by textures, nature, forms and architecture."

DESCRIBE YOUR HOME IN 3 WORDS

"Calm, cozy and Southern inspired."

WHAT FEATURES DO YOU APPRECIATE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR HOME?

"The house we bought 2 years ago was previously renovated by architects in a clever way. A typical townhouse became something unique. We only have 2 small terraces however everything feels very ‘open’ with large windows. I like how our house really fits with my personal style and preferences. It’s ‘done’ but also feels a bit ‘unfinished’ in certain details. I love visual imperfections."

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SPACE IN THE HOUSE?

"First our bedroom but since a few weeks the terrace. The man of the house made it his little project and I’m surprised how such a small outer area could turn into something so nice. It feels like we’re in a different country. Surrounded by loads of green, our own vegetables and herbs, Mexican incenses, earthy pots, flowers, Colombian furniture,… We love to hang out there after work and make it cozy."

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE OBJECT?

"We like to collect little treasures we find while traveling. All over the house you’ll find ceramic fishes and my favorite one is a very big, colorful fish hanging in our living room."

WHY DID YOU CHOSE FOR D&M?

"One of the most important things for me interior-wise is the material things are made off. I like things to be real and natural. A real stone pot instead of a plastic one. I love how every design is different and that after time, the stone shifts colors because of the weather, sunlight, etc. It lives.

D&M has a beautiful collection with very earthy textures and colors that are timeless and fit with my personal preferences."

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE D&M OBJECT?

"The big light grey stone pot we chose for our brand new baby fig tree. (— TALE collection)"

HOW DOES YOUR HOME REFLECT YOUR CREATIVE ACTIVITIES?

"Our interior changes a lot, just like my mind does full of ideas and experiments.

Nothing is ever done, it’s alive. I like to take a lot of time to find the perfect pieces of furniture instead of having the perfect showroom right from the start. The more personal a house gets, the better!"
